Absorb Elements 5E Guide

Absorb Elements is the reaction that turns a Fireball from lethal to survivable. When you take acid, cold, fire, lightning, or thunder damage, you use your reaction to gain resistance to that instance’s damage type until the start of your next turn — and your next melee attack can ride the leftover energy for bonus damage.

This Absorb Elements 5E guide covers timing, the bonus damage rider, and how it compares to Shield.

How does Absorb Elements work?

  1. You take qualifying elemental damage.
  2. As a reaction, you cast Absorb Elements.
  3. You have resistance to that damage type until the start of your next turn (including against the triggering damage).
  4. The first time you hit with a melee attack on your next turn, the target takes extra 1d6 damage of that type (scales when upcast).

Best uses

  • Dragon breath, Fireball, Lightning Bolt, and similar save-for-half nukes
  • Melee gishes who will swing next turn and cash the rider
  • Rangers/Druid tanks who see the same energy type repeatedly

Frequently Asked Questions

Does resistance apply to the triggering damage?

Yes. That is the whole point of the reaction timing.

Can you use it against poison or psychic damage?

No. Only acid, cold, fire, lightning, or thunder.

Do you need a free hand?

It has a somatic component, so you need a hand free unless a feature (War Caster, etc.) lets you ignore that.
