Charm Person 5E Guide

Charm Person is the social lever spell. On a failed Wisdom save, a humanoid regards you as a friendly acquaintance — you have advantage on Charisma checks against them — until the spell ends or you / your allies harm them.

This Charm Person 5E guide covers the “they know” problem and combat vs intrigue use.

How does Charm Person work?

One humanoid you can see within range makes a Wisdom save. On a failure, it is charmed by you until the spell ends or you/allies do anything harmful to it. The charmed creature regards you as a friendly acquaintance.

When the spell ends, the creature knows it was charmed by you.

Best uses

  • Get past a guard without murder
  • Soften a merchant negotiation
  • Buy time in a tense roleplay scene

The hangover problem

Because targets remember, Charm Person can burn bridges. Use it when the social consequences are acceptable — or when you will never see them again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it work in combat?

Creatures fighting you usually succeed on the save automatically in many editions’ wording (advantage / auto-success when hostile). Check your print — hostile targets are much harder.

Charm Person vs Friends cantrip?

Friends is shorter, also burns goodwill, and is noisier socially. Charm Person lasts longer and is a real spell slot.

Can you charm multiple guards?

Upcast for extra targets — perfect for a gatehouse scene.
