Guiding Bolt 5E Guide

Guiding Bolt is the Cleric’s flashy opener. A streak of light deals 4d6 radiant damage on a hit and the next attack against that target before the start of your next turn has advantage.

This Guiding Bolt 5E guide covers the setup value, upcasting, and when Sacred Flame is the smarter Action.

How does Guiding Bolt work?

Make a ranged spell attack against a target within 120 feet. On a hit:

  1. The target takes 4d6 radiant damage.
  2. The next attack roll made against this target before the start of your next turn has advantage — thanks to the mystical dim light (flavor) / glowing outline (mechanics).

Miss and you get nothing. That is the risk vs Sacred Flame’s save-for-half-or-nothing cantrip profile.

Best uses

  • Round-one spike into a boss while a Rogue or Paladin is next in initiative
  • Undead hunts where radiant damage matters
  • Setting up Extra Attack martials who can cash the advantage immediately

Burn Guiding Bolt when the advantage will be used. Otherwise Sacred Flame keeps your slots for Healing Word and Spirit Guardians.

Upcasting

Each slot above 1st adds 1d6 damage. It stays a solid single-target option, but at higher levels your concentration spells usually matter more than a bigger bolt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the advantage apply to any attack?

Yes — the next attack roll against that target before the start of your next turn, from any ally (or you).

What if nobody attacks before my next turn?

The advantage is wasted. Call your shot — tell the table who should swing next.

Can cover stop Guiding Bolt?

It is a ranged spell attack, so cover affects the attack roll normally. Sacred Flame is better against peeking enemies behind cover.
