Haste 5E Guide

Haste is the martial multiplier. One willing creature gets doubled speed, +2 AC, advantage on Dexterity saves, and an extra Attack action option — until concentration drops and lethargy hits.

This Haste 5E guide covers targeting, lethargy, and when Slow is the better 3rd-level pick.

How does Haste work?

Choose a willing creature you can see within range. Until the spell ends, the target’s speed is doubled, it gains +2 AC, it has advantage on Dexterity saving throws, and it gains an additional action on each of its turns. That action can be used only to take the Attack (one weapon attack only), Dash, Disengage, Hide, or Use an Object action.

When the spell ends, the target can’t move or take actions until after its next turn (lethargy) as it reels from the magical exertion.

Who to Haste

  • Extra Attack martials (fighters, paladins, monks with strong attack routines)
  • Rogues who want another attack chassis and Disengage flexibility
  • Rarely the squishy caster — protect concentration somewhere else

Lethargy planning

If you drop concentration, your best fighter may waste a turn. War Caster, safe positioning, and not stacking fragile concentration are part of the spell’s real cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the extra action be used for a spell?

No — the extra action is limited to the listed options (one weapon attack if you Attack).

Does Haste stack with Action Surge?

Yes in the sense that Action Surge is a separate feature — your turn can get very swingy. Confirm stacking edge cases at your table.

Is it better than Hypnotic Pattern?

Different jobs. Hypnotic Pattern controls crowds; Haste turbocharges one killer.
