Mirror Image 5E Guide

Mirror Image is the wizard’s “don’t hit me” button that isn’t a reaction. Three illusory duplicates appear; attacks that might have hit you can strike an image instead until the duplicates are gone.

This Mirror Image 5E guide covers the miss math, stacking with other defenses, and when to cast something else.

How does Mirror Image work?

Three illusory duplicates of yourself appear in your space. For the duration, the duplicates move with you and mimic you, making it impossible to track which image is real.

Each time a creature targets you with an attack during the spell’s duration, roll to see whether it hits you or a duplicate (based on how many images remain). A duplicate’s AC equals 10 + your Dexterity modifier. On a hit against a duplicate, the duplicate is destroyed. The spell ends when all duplicates are gone.

Exact d20 thresholds follow your PHB (commonly 6+ with three images, 8+ with two, 11+ with one).

Why it’s strong

  • Not concentration — stack with Haste, Fly, or web control
  • Punishes multiattack monsters that burn attacks on phantoms
  • Works before you know you need Shield

Mirror Image vs Shield vs Misty Step

Cast Mirror Image when you expect a round of attacks. Save Shield for the hit that still finds you. Misty Step when positioning is the real problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do area spells destroy images?

Spells that don’t make attack rolls generally ignore Mirror Image — Fireball still hits you.

Does it help against saving-throw effects?

No. Only attacks that target you.

Should Warlocks take it?

Yes as a defensive option that doesn’t eat Hex concentration — pair with Eldritch Blast kits.
