Revivify 5E Guide

Revivify is the emergency revive button. Touch a creature that died within the last minute, spend a 300 gp diamond, and bring them back with 1 hit point — no long ritual, no days of downtime.

This Revivify 5E guide covers timing, components, and party planning.

How does Revivify work?

You touch a creature that has died within the last minute. That creature returns to life with 1 hit point. The spell can’t restore missing body parts and can’t revive someone who died of old age.

The diamond is consumed. Budget for it like a party consumable, not a one-time purchase.

The one-minute clock

Start the timer at death. In combat, that is often 10 rounds — long enough if someone can reach the body, short if the party is separated or the caster is down.

Practical habits:

  • Keep the diamond on the healer, not in a shared bag across the map
  • Keep the ally up with Healing Word or Cure Wounds so you never need the diamond
  • Clear threats or use cover so the caster can safely spend an action touching the body

Revivify vs Raise Dead and friends

SpellLevelWindowTypical cost
Revivify3rd1 minute300 gp diamond
Raise Dead5th10 daysHigher diamond cost + ritual time
Resurrection7thLongerMuch higher

Revivify is the mid-fight / immediate post-fight tool. Raise Dead and higher are for when the minute already expired.

Who should prepare it?

At least one character in a deadly campaign should have Revivify prepared (or a scroll / item backup). Paladins and clerics are the usual holders; warlocks and others may get it via multiclass or specific features depending on your books and DM.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Revivify remove exhaustion or conditions?

It returns the creature with 1 HP. Other conditions from the fight may still apply per DM — the core effect is life + 1 HP, not a full rest.

Can it revive someone turned to ash / disintegrated?

If there’s no body to touch, Revivify usually fails. Higher resurrection magic is the answer for destroyed remains.

Should every party buy diamonds early?

Yes for hard tables. Treat 300 gp diamonds as medical insurance. Pair with strong in-fight healing like Healing Word and Cure Wounds so you need Revivify less often.
