Sacred Flame 5E Guide

Sacred Flame is the Cleric’s signature ranged cantrip. Flame-like radiance descends on a creature you can see within 60 feet; it must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take radiant damage — and cover doesn’t help.

This Sacred Flame 5E guide covers the rules that make it special, damage scaling, and when another cantrip is better.

How does Sacred Flame work?

Flame-like radiance descends on a creature that you can see within range. The target must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 1d8 radiant damage. The target gains no benefit from cover for this saving throw.

Damage increases as you level (typically 2d8 at 5th, 3d8 at 11th, 4d8 at 17th — confirm in your sourcebook).

Why “no cover” matters

Half and three-quarters cover normally boost AC and Dex saves. Sacred Flame ignores that. Enemies peeking around pillars still make a flat Dex save against your spell DC.

Keep Sacred Flame for turns you need a free Action attack that punches past cover. Spend slots on Guiding Bolt when you need a spike or to set up an ally.

Best uses

  • Finish low-HP undead with radiant damage
  • Pressure enemies behind arrows slits / pillars
  • Pair with Spirit Guardians rounds where your Action is free after bonus-action Spiritual Weapon

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Sacred Flame require an attack roll?

No. It is a Dexterity saving throw, not a ranged spell attack.

Can total cover block Sacred Flame?

If you cannot see the target, you cannot choose them. Total cover that blocks line of sight stops the cantrip; lesser cover does not help their save.

Is radiant resistance common?

At low levels, no. At high levels, some fiends and celestials resist it — swap cantrips when you know the enemy type.
