Fire Bolt 5E Guide

Fire Bolt 5E guide: ranged spell attack fire cantrip, object ignition, damage scaling, and when to pick it over Ray of Frost or Toll the Dead.

Edition note: This guide targets 2014 5E (legacy PHB-style rules). If your table uses the 2024 Player's Handbook, confirm wording, class lists, and any renamed features before locking a build.

Fire Bolt is the default Wizard and Sorcerer damage cantrip: a ranged spell attack that deals fire damage and can ignite flammable objects. Simple, reliable, and still useful at high levels when slots are spent on control.

Spell Level: Cantrip
Spell Type: Evocation
Casting Time: 1 Action
Range: 120 feet
Component Requirements: Verbal, Somatic
Duration: Instantaneous
Class: Sorcerer, Wizard

How does Fire Bolt work?

Make a ranged spell attack against a creature or object within 120 feet. On a hit, the target takes fire damage (1d10 at low levels, scaling with character level — confirm your print for breakpoints). A flammable object hit by this spell ignites if it is not being worn or carried.

Why Fire Bolt stays on spell lists

  • Attack roll, not a save — works well with advantage from Faerie Fire, Help, or unseen attackers.
  • 120-foot range matches Eldritch Blast's comfort zone for many fights.
  • Object ignition is a real exploration and puzzle tool, not just flavor.

Fire Bolt vs other blaster cantrips

Cantrip Strength
Fire Bolt Attack roll, fire, ignite objects
Toll the Dead Wisdom save; d12 when target is hurt
Sacred Flame Dex save, radiant, ignores cover
Eldritch Blast Warlock-only force beams + invocations

Pick Fire Bolt when you want attack-roll synergy and do not mind fire resistance showing up later. Keep a second damage type if your campaign is heavy on fire-immune foes.

Tactical tips

  • Use cover and long range; you do not need to stand next to martials.
  • Ignite oil, tapestries, or wooden barricades when the fiction allows — DMs love (and fear) creative Fire Bolt.
  • Against fire-resistant bosses, swap to a non-fire option or lean on leveled slots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Fire Bolt work underwater?

Fire spells are often awkward underwater depending on table rulings. Ask before you bank a naval fight on it.

Can I ignite a creature's clothes?

Usually only objects not worn or carried. Targeting worn gear is a DM call and often disallowed for balance.

Is Fire Bolt better than Ray of Frost?

Fire Bolt is higher damage die and ignition. Ray of Frost slows on a hit. Different jobs — many blasters still prefer Fire Bolt as the default.
