Misty Step 5E Guide

Misty Step is one of the most reliable escape and reposition tools in D&D 5E. It is a bonus-action teleport that gets you out of melee, past a choke point, or onto high ground without spending your Action.

This Misty Step 5E guide covers the spell stats, how the teleport works, the best times to cast it, and how it stacks up against similar mobility spells.

How does Misty Step work?

Briefly shrouded by silvery mist, you teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see.

Key rules details:

  • Bonus action — you can still Attack, Cast a cantrip, Dash, or Disengage with your Action on the same turn.
  • 30 feet — the destination must be an unoccupied space you can see.
  • Verbal only — no somatic component, so you can cast it while holding weapons or a shield (as long as you can speak).
  • Self only — you cannot Misty Step an ally. For that, look at Vortex Warp.

You do not need a clear path. Walls, creatures, and difficult terrain between you and the destination do not block the teleport, as long as you can see the space and it is unoccupied.

Best uses for Misty Step in combat

Escape a bad melee

If a monster grapples you, surrounds you, or locks you in a hallway, Misty Step often beats Disengage. Disengage still spends movement; Misty Step relocates you immediately and leaves your Action free for a cantrip or Attack.

Cross gaps and hazards

Lava, pits, and magical walls are common encounter design. If you can see a safe tile on the other side within 30 feet, Misty Step ignores the intervening hazard.

Seize high ground or cover

Bonus-action teleport onto a balcony, behind a pillar, or into dim light can flip an encounter before you spend your Action.

Break opportunity-attack chains

Teleporting does not provoke opportunity attacks the way normal movement does. That makes Misty Step a cleaner exit than walking away when you lack Disengage.

Misty Step vs Vortex Warp vs Dimension Door

Dimension Door4thActionYou (+ willing creature)500 ft, no sight required

Pick Misty Step when you need a cheap, reliable self-rescue and want to keep your Action.

Pick Vortex Warp when you need to relocate an ally — or force an enemy — and can spend an Action. See the full Vortex Warp 5E guide.

Pick Dimension Door for long-range extraction, carrying a friend, or teleporting somewhere you cannot see.

Classes and characters that get Misty Step

Misty Step appears on several lists:

  • Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard — on the class spell lists
  • Elf (Eladrin) / some racial Fey-themed options — often as a short-rest racial teleport that mirrors Misty Step
  • Subclasses — Fey-touched and similar feats, plus certain Warlock/Sorcerer paths, are common ways for non-full casters to pick it up

If your table uses optional feats, Fey Touched is one of the most popular ways for martial characters to grab Misty Step without multiclassing.

Mistakes to avoid

  • No line of sight — if fog, darkness, or a wall blocks vision of the destination, you cannot go there.
  • Occupied spaces — another creature’s space is invalid even if you could squeeze past it on foot.
  • Saving it forever — a 2nd-level slot is valuable, but a dead caster helps no one. Use it early when the alternative is eating three opportunity attacks.
  • Forgetting verbal — silence effects and gagged/unable-to-speak conditions shut Misty Step down.

How good is Misty Step in 5E?

Excellent. Few 2nd-level spells offer this much action-economy value. It is not flashy damage, but it prevents the worst rounds of an adventuring day: getting locked down, failing to reach an objective, or dying in a corner.

If you prepare only a handful of 2nd-level spells as a mid-level caster, Misty Step deserves a serious look.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Misty Step provoke opportunity attacks?

No. Teleporting to the destination is not the same as leaving a reach with normal movement, so opportunity attacks are not triggered by the Misty Step teleport itself.

Can you Misty Step upward or through a window?

Yes, as long as the destination is within 30 feet, unoccupied, and you can see it. A second-story window ledge is a classic play.

Can Misty Step get you out of a grapple?

Yes. Grapple ends when you are no longer within the grappler’s reach. Teleporting 30 feet away typically ends the grapple immediately.

Is Misty Step better than Vortex Warp?

They solve different problems. Misty Step is the better self-rescue and keeps your Action free. Vortex Warp is better when you need to move someone else. Many casters eventually want both.
