Vampire Survivors: How to Unlock and Use Garlic

Garlic is one of Vampire Survivors’ best early-game comfort weapons: a damaging aura that melts bats and weak enemies that wander into your personal space.

This guide covers how to unlock it, how to play the aura style, and how it evolves.

How to unlock Garlic

Garlic is typically unlocked by dealing a large amount of total damage over time across runs (community unlock thresholds have shifted with patches). If it is not yet in your collection:

  1. Keep clearing early stages with consistent builds.
  2. Check the unlock list / collection screen after runs for Garlic’s condition progress.
  3. Once unlocked, it appears in level-up and stage item pools according to normal RNG.

If your build of the game shows an explicit counter in the unlocks menu, treat that number as authoritative.

How Garlic plays

Garlic deals damage in a circle around you. It shines when:

  • You stand in dense packs instead of pure kiting
  • You pair it with area magnet / XP passives so you can stay in the fight
  • You use it as “bodyguard” DPS while a directed weapon (Wand, Knife, Axe) handles elites

It is weaker against single tanky bosses unless evolved or supported by strong passives.

Evolution: Soul Eater

Garlic evolves when paired with its required passive (commonly Pummarola) and a late chest after both pieces are ready — same evolution rules covered in How to Evolve Weapons.

Soul Eater upgrades the aura fantasy into a stronger sustain/damage package. Rush this evolution when you want safer Mad Forest / Library clears.

Build tips

  • Do not force Garlic on every character — speedsters sometimes prefer pure projectile kiting.
  • If packs constantly touch you anyway, Garlic converts that mistake into damage.
  • For tier context, see the weapons tier list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Garlic good for beginners?

Yes. It forgives messy movement and teaches packing enemies into an aura.

Does Garlic replace armor?

No. It reduces how punished you are for contact; you still want growth, armor, and smart kiting on harder difficulties.

Should I evolve Garlic every run?

When you can secure Pummarola without wrecking the rest of the build, yes — Soul Eater is a strong mid-run spike.
