Best 3rd-Level Spells 5E (2014)

Best 3rd-level spells in D&D 5E: Fireball, Counterspell, Hypnotic Pattern, Spirit Guardians, Haste, Revivify, and when to cast each.

Edition note: This guide targets 2014 5E (legacy PHB-style rules). If your table uses the 2024 Player's Handbook, confirm wording, class lists, and any renamed features before locking a build.

Third level is the famous power spike: Fireball memes, Counterspell wars, and Spirit Guardians turning Clerics into lawnmowers. These are the best 3rd-level spells 5E for 2014 tables — ranked by how often they actually end encounters or save campaigns.

S-tier encounter enders

Hypnotic Pattern

Hypnotic Pattern can delete half a fight on a failed Wisdom save. No damage, huge action-economy swing. Protect concentration.

Spirit Guardians

Spirit Guardians is radiant (or necrotic) aura damage plus speed penalty. Walk through packs; combine with Spiritual Weapon and Dodge for the classic Cleric turn.

Counterspell

Counterspell answers enemy casters. The best 3rd-level spell is sometimes the one that stops theirs.

Fireball

Fireball is still the AoE damage benchmark: 8d6 in a 20-foot radius. Use it when enemies are clustered and allies are not.

S-tier "keep the campaign alive"

Revivify

Revivify is the one-minute diamond revive. Someone in the party should have access by the time deadly fights start.

A-tier power spikes

Spell Why you prepare it
Haste Extra action for a martial; protect concentration or the crash hurts
Slow Softens packs; multi-target action-economy tax
Fear Cone that empties the front line
Fly Vertical mobility; boss-fight escape and kite
Aura of Vitality Bonus-action heal pool between or during fights

How to spend scarce 3rd-level slots

  1. Counterspell ready if enemy casters exist.
  2. One control bomb (Hypnotic Pattern / Fear / Slow) over a second Fireball.
  3. Spirit Guardians if you are a melee Cleric — it is your identity.
  4. Hold Revivify components for the worst day, not the average day.

Fireball is correct when the board is a gift. It is wrong when one tough save-or-suck would end the fight cleaner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Fireball still the best 3rd-level spell?

Best damage AoE? Often yes. Best spell overall? Usually Hypnotic Pattern, Counterspell, or Spirit Guardians depending on class and table.

Should every party have Counterspell?

Against enemy spellcasters, yes — even one character with it changes the threat model. Against pure martial dungeons, you can flex other slots.

Haste or Slow?

Haste buffs one ally hard. Slow taxes many enemies. Prefer Slow when facing groups; Haste when you have one nova martial and can babysit concentration.
